Brand Origin

The name Althea stems from the Ancient Greek Althaía (Ἀλθαία), derived from the verb althaínein (ἀλθαίνειν), meaning to heal, cure, or make whole, and the noun althos (ἄλθος), meaning a healing remedy or wholesomeness.

In classical Greek thought, althos wasn’t about aggressive medical intervention. Instead, it referred to restorative healing: creating the conditions, using natural remedies, and providing the care necessary for the body to return to its balanced, natural state.

That is the foundation of Althea. We believe in crafting intentional spaces where you can slow down, reconnect, and let true restoration happen naturally.

For years, my world was shaped by high-level intellect and enterprise. Holding a PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, I navigated the fast-paced spheres of global strategy, understanding human potential entirely from the neck up. But beneath the modern hustle, a quiet truth persisted: my mind was fulfilled, but my heart was longing for the sacred art of simply receiving.

The ritual that always anchored me was returning to the body, whether moving through the graceful discipline of reformer Pilates or surrendering to the rhythm of the ocean beneath my longboard. In movement, the mental chatter dissolved, my nervous system found soft ground, and I remembered how to soften rather than strive.

That surrender deepened profoundly when I stepped into my path as a Reiki energy healer. Working with subtle energy opened doorways to a level of profound healing and self-actualization that intellect alone could never reach. I learned the true power of the feminine: to hold space, to nurture, and to allow the body’s ancient wisdom to guide us back to wholeness.

Althea is the natural overflowing of that inner work. Named after the Greek essence of she who heals and restores to wholeness, this is my devoted vocation. It is what happened when I stopped pushing, honored my softest truths, and chose to build a life in radiant alignment with my heart.

Through Althea, I curate sanctuaries where women can finally release the heavy armor of doing and rest deeply into being. We pair intentional, mindful movement with the breathtaking medicine of the natural world and the tender restoration of energy work. Whether moving on an open-air stone terrace, unwinding beneath a lush garden, or drifting along turquoise waters, these experiences are designed as an exquisite, nurturing exhale.

Outside of our sanctuaries, my life is filled with the textures that bring me joy: setting long, sunlit tables with home-cooked meals and fresh blooms for people I adore, dancing until late to soulful house and disco rhythms, and starting my mornings in quiet conversation with the sea.

Althea is my love letter to the body’s innate power to heal. It is a warm, feminine invitation to slow down, honor your divine inner compass, and remember what it feels like to live in full, radiant flow.

Juliana Barillaro

Master reformer & mat instructor, teacher trainer

Juliana is a Master Reformer and Mat Pilates Instructor, Teacher Trainer and Pre- and Post-Natal qualified instructor. She was formerly Pilates Lead at Move Your Frame and has recently taken on the role of Head Master Trainer (EMEA) for Your Reformer, an Australian-founded Reformer Pilates company with a growing global presence, spanning equipment, digital fitness and education.

At the heart of Juliana’s approach is the belief that movement should be enjoyable, joyful, accessible and empowering. She is a strong advocate for moving the body for fun, trying new things and celebrating the simple act of showing up. Her philosophy is rooted in giving yourself the biggest kind of love and appreciation. With a background in Clinical Pilates, her classes combine technical understanding with a relaxed, intuitive approach that allows people to find their own connection to movement.

Her background in music has naturally shaped her approach to Pilates; a combination of flow, dynamics and intention. Whether it’s the pace of a sequence, the breath behind a movement or the energy brought into the room, she believes that movement is unique and innate. This perspective allows her to create classes that feel both purposeful and intuitive, encouraging clients to connect with their bodies in a more instinctive and expressive way.
